“Cemeteries Are Fascinating Places” presented by Susan Mathews
President Meier introduced our speaker, Susan Matthews, president of the Marion County Genealogical Society and a member of the OGS Cemetery Committee, whose topic was “Cemeteries Are Fascinating Places.”
Her extensive PowerPoint presentation contained many photos from area cemeteries illustrating types, styles and materials used for tombstones and unusual epitaphs. She explained symbolism used and showed various examples of military markers. She also provided helpful hints for taking photos of monuments and documenting the location of graves. She closed with an alert to safety issues to be aware of when exploring cemeteries.
