September 22, 2018 – Meeting

The Story of Lizzie Larzelere, former local madam.

Lizzie’s great, great-granddaughter, Debra Lape, opened the program by sharing newspaper articles from the Morrow County Sentinel and the Marion Star which told of Lizzie’s local activities centering around the American House Hotel in Mt. Gilead and the White Pigeon Saloon in Marion. Debra told of her 40-year quest to discover the truth of her ancestor’s amazing life.

Mary Kate Trip brought Lizzie to life with her soft-spoken portrayal of Lizzie as a charming, but cunning, shrewd businesswoman whose life, though scandalous, showed great entrepreneurship. This was Mary Kate’s second visit to our Society as she had previously portrayed Victoria Woodhull.

Society business included:

President Ann Artrip reported presenting a plaque to Fletcher Gompf for his outstanding 4-H genealogy project at the Morrow County Fair.

Tim Foor gave updates on his efforts to restore monuments in the Pagetown Cemetery. He stated costs were averaging $100 per stone.
