Desperadoes hit Sparta between 1840-1850

Several notorious desperadoes were in the township between 1840 and 1850. They were connected with a gang of counterfeiters who passed counterfeit $2.50 gold pieces upon the citizens until finally detected. A posse was formed and gave chase but it was mostly wilderness and they hunted them as far as the Bloomfield cemetery before they escaped.
