Taken from a local newspaper, She Collects $55.25
In November 1952, Howard L Keller of Sparta, started on 2 new experiences – the Army and an engagement for marriage after the Army to Ina Jane Hendrickson.
Soon afterward, some friends jokingly handed him $6 worth of 1952 quarters when he asked for change. Instead of spending the money, he took it to Ina, saying “Buy yourself a present.”
Ina immediately got a wonderful idea, and replied, “No, I’ll save them and more of the same kind, for my wedding dress.”
From Alaska, where Howard was stationed, came 15 more 1952 quarters. And, since Ina works at National Bank in Mt Vernon, it was not difficult for her to run across 1952 quarters. Relatives and friends began watching for the 1952 quarters and turning them over to her. Cashiers in restaurants, clerks in stores, all remembered to save the right kind of quarters for the bride-to-be.
Recently, Ina spread out $55.25 worth of quarters and $24 worth of half dollars of 1952 vintage. A portion went across the counter for wedding satin, veiling and lace. The groom was discharged from the Army in November.
The wedding will take place in Sparta next May 27, and the quarter-saver’s father, the Rev JW Hendrickson, of Ashley, will officiate.
