Worst Snow Storm Hits County Rural Residents Still Stranded

Taken from the Morrow County Sentinel dated December 13, 1962

One of the worst snow storms ever hit Morrow County last Thursday and Friday with paralyzing drifts of snow. While the snowfall was estimated at only 5 to 8 inches, the heavy winds accompanying the snowfall drifted shut nearly all roads in the county. Many rural residents are still snowbound yet this week because of the drifts on county or township roads that highway crews have been unable to get to. Drifts were reported as deep as 14 feet in places and snow plows were ineffective against them.

Additional help of bulldozers and maintainers had to be hired by the County and State Highway Depts to help with the cleanup. All county schools closed Friday morning and remained closed through Tuesday. A check on Wednesday morning found all schools still closed. Only 1 of 7 basketball games scheduled by the five high schools in the county last weekend was able to be played. Adding to the misery of the heavy snow the thermometer dropped to ten degrees below zero Wednesday morning. The Globe Hotel in Mt Gilead was crowded with stranded travelers and some even slept in temporary quarters in the lounge. Numerous filling stations on highways and near the freeway reported that many travelers were forced to spend the night at the stations. Some local oil workers, having difficulty getting to their drilling sites, returned home to Michigan until local conditions improve.
